Why would the starter try to engage while engine is already running?

A starter motor attempting to engage while the engine is already running is a serious problem indicating a fault in the vehicle's electrical system. Here are the most common reasons:

* Faulty Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) or Start Inhibit Switch: This switch prevents the starter from engaging unless the transmission is in Park (or Neutral, depending on the vehicle). A malfunctioning NSS can allow the starter to engage even when the engine is running. This is probably the most common cause.

* Faulty Ignition Switch: The ignition switch controls the power flow to various components, including the starter. A faulty switch might send power to the starter circuit even when the key is not in the start position.

* Short Circuit in the Wiring: A short circuit in the wiring harness leading to or from the starter motor can provide an unintended path for current, causing the starter to engage. This could be due to damaged wiring, corrosion, or rodent damage.

* Faulty Starter Solenoid: The solenoid is the electromagnetic switch that activates the starter motor. A malfunctioning solenoid might not fully disengage, leading to continuous engagement or intermittent engagement even when the engine is running.

* Low Voltage Issues: While less likely, severely low voltage in the electrical system could cause erratic behavior, potentially leading to the starter engaging when it shouldn't. This is often accompanied by other electrical problems.

* Faulty Starter Relay (in some vehicles): Some vehicles utilize a relay to control the starter motor. A faulty relay could cause the starter to engage inappropriately.

* Improper repair or modification: A previous repair to the starting system might have been done incorrectly, leading to this issue.

Ignoring this problem is dangerous. Continued attempts to engage the starter while the engine is running can strip the starter gear teeth, damage the flywheel, and even cause serious injury. It's crucial to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and repair the fault immediately.
