Disconnect Fuel Lines:
1. Locate Fuel Filter:
- The fuel filter is usually located in the engine compartment near the fuel injector rail. It's a cylindrical-shaped component with inlet and outlet fuel lines.
2. Relieve Fuel Pressure:
- Before disconnecting any fuel lines, you'll need to relieve the pressure in the fuel system. Look for a fuel pressure release valve or Schrader valve near the fuel injector rail. Press the valve to release the pressure.
3. Disconnect Inlet Line:
- Locate the fuel line connected to the inlet side of the fuel filter. This is usually the line coming from the fuel tank.
- Some Freestar models may have a quick-connect fitting for the fuel lines. To disconnect, squeeze the release tabs on the connector and pull the fuel line off the filter port.
- If there is a traditional screw-type clamp securing the fuel line, use a screwdriver or pliers to loosen the clamp and slide it off the line. Then, carefully pull the line off the filter port.
4. Disconnect Outlet Line:
- Repeat the process for the outlet fuel line, which usually goes to the fuel injector rail. Disconnect it from the filter outlet port using the same method—quick-connect fitting release or clamp removal.
5. Remove Filter:
- Once both fuel lines are disconnected, you can remove the fuel filter by turning it counterclockwise and lifting it out of its housing.
6. Install New Filter:
- Insert the new fuel filter into its housing and turn it clockwise until it's secure.
7. Reconnect Fuel Lines:
- Reconnect the fuel lines to the filter ports in the same way you disconnected them. Ensure the connections are secure.
8. Start Engine:
- Once everything is reconnected, attempt to start the vehicle to check for any fuel leaks.
Note: After replacing the fuel filter, it's recommended to turn the ignition key to the "ON" position for a few seconds without starting the engine to enable the fuel system to pressurize. This will help the fuel system prime up before attempting to start the vehicle.
