Procedure:
1. Disconnect the Battery: Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to avoid any electrical accidents.
2. Locate the Speedometer Cable: The speedometer cable is typically connected to the transmission or the rear differential. It's usually a flexible, metal-sheathed cable.
3. Disconnect the Cable from the Transmission:
- Underneath the vehicle, locate where the speedometer cable connects to the transmission housing.
- Use the flat-head screwdriver or pliers to detach the cable from the transmission.
4. Disconnect the Speedometer Cable from the Instrument Panel:
- Go inside the car and locate the instrument cluster.
- Behind the instrument cluster, find where the speedometer cable connects to the speedometer head.
- Detach the cable by pressing the release button or using the pliers to disconnect it.
5. Route the New Cable:
- Feed the new speedometer cable through the firewall and connect it to the speedometer head behind the instrument cluster.
- Route the cable along the same path as the old one, making sure it doesn't interfere with any other components or moving parts.
6. Reconnect the Cable to the Transmission:
- Guide the end of the speedometer cable to the transmission housing.
- Make sure to align the cable with the threads on the transmission.
- Hand-tighten the cable to secure it in place.
7. Reconnect the Negative Battery Terminal: Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery to the battery post.
8. Test the Speedometer:
- Start the engine and take the car for a test drive.
- Verify that the speedometer is providing accurate speed readings.
If the speedometer is still not working properly after you replace the cable, there might be an issue with the speedometer itself or other components in the system. It's recommended to have a professional mechanic diagnose and fix the problem.
