How to Remove a 3.1L Engine from a 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

1. Disconnect the battery. This is a safety precaution that will prevent the engine from starting while you are working on it.

2. Drain the coolant. This can be done by removing the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator.

3. Remove the fuel line. This is located on the passenger side of the engine. There is a clip holding it on which needs to be removed with a flathead screwdriver.

4. Remove the air intake. This is located on the passenger side of the engine.

5. Disconnect the electrical connectors. There are several electrical connectors that need to be disconnected. These include the connector for the fuel injectors, the oxygen sensor, and the distributor.

6. Remove the exhaust manifolds. There are two exhaust manifolds, one on each side of the engine. Each exhaust manifold is held on by four nuts.

7. Remove the transmission. The transmission is held on by several bolts. Once the bolts are removed, you can pry the transmission away from the engine.

8. Remove the engine mounts. There are two engine mounts, one on each side of the engine. Each engine mount is held on by two bolts.

9. Lift the engine out of the car. Once the engine mounts are removed, you can lift the engine out of the car with an engine hoist.

10. Reinstall the engine. The engine can be reinstalled in reverse order of the removal procedure.
