How to adjust timing in a 96 Mitsubishi 3000GT?

To adjust the timing in a 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT, you will need the following tools:

- 10mm socket wrench

- 12mm socket wrench

- 14mm socket wrench

- 17mm socket wrench

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Timing light

Step 1: Locate the timing marks

Open the hood of your 3000GT and locate the timing marks. The timing marks are located on the timing belt cover and the crankshaft pulley. The timing mark on the timing belt cover is a small notch, and the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley is a small dot.

Step 2: Remove the timing belt cover

Use the 10mm socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the timing belt cover in place. There are four bolts on the top of the cover and two bolts on the bottom.

Step 3: Set the engine to TDC

Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley aligns with the notch on the timing belt cover. This will set the engine to top dead center (TDC).

Step 4: Loosen the timing belt tensioner

Use the 14mm socket wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the timing belt tensioner in place. The timing belt tensioner is located on the front of the engine, near the top.

Step 5: Adjust the timing belt

Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry the timing belt tensioner away from the timing belt. This will loosen the timing belt. You can now adjust the timing belt by moving it one tooth at a time.

Step 6: Tighten the timing belt tensioner

Once the timing belt is adjusted, tighten the timing belt tensioner bolt. The tensioner bolt should be tightened to 25 ft-lbs.

Step 7: Verify the timing

Use the timing light to verify that the timing is correct. The timing should be set at 10 degrees BTDC. If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 4-6.

Step 8: Reinstall the timing belt cover

Install the timing belt cover and bolts in the reverse order that you removed them.
