How do you reset the service engine light on a 1997 Toyota Camry?

Method 1: Using a Scan Tool

A scan tool is the most convenient and accurate means to reset the service engine light on your 1997 Camry.

1. Connect the scan tool to the diagnostic port under your dashboard. Most newer Camry models have this port located below the steering column, under the dash.

2. Turn on the ignition to accessory mode (position II), but don't start your car.

3. Navigate to the "service" or "maintenance" menu on the scan tool.

4. Select the option to "reset" or "clear" the service engine light.

5. Follow the prompts on the scan tool to confirm the reset.

Method 2: Using the OBD-II Reset Button

Some 1997 Camry models have an OBD-II reset button that you can use to clear the service engine light.

1. Locate the OBD-II reset button. In most Camrys, this button is located under the hood, near the fuse box. It's usually marked with the letters "OBD-II."

2. Press and hold the OBD-II reset button for at least 5 seconds.

3. Release the button and turn on the ignition.

4. The service engine light should be reset.

Method 3: Disconnecting the Battery

You can also reset the service engine light by disconnecting the battery from your Camry's electrical system.

1. Turn off the engine and allow the vehicle to cool down completely.

2. Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery terminal (marked with a "-") by turning the terminal bolt counterclockwise with a wrench or a pair of pliers.

3. Wait at least 10 minutes, and then reconnect the negative battery terminal.

4. Turn on the ignition and the engine. The service light should be reset.
