1. Loosen the serpentine belt.
- You will need a serpentine belt wrench.
- Put the wrench on the serpentine belt tensioner and turn it clockwise until the belt is loose.
- Pry the belt off the alternator pulley.
2. Remove the electrical connections.
- Disconnect the positive battery cable to prevent any electrical shocks.
- Disconnect the electrical connector attached to the alternator.
3. Remove the alternator mounting bolts and remove the alternator.
- There will be two bolts located at the top and bottom of the alternator. Use a wrench to loosen and remove them.
- After removing the bolts, you can remove the alternator by lifting it out of the engine compartment.
4. Prepare the new alternator.
- Transfer the bracket attached to the old alternator to the new one.
- Place the new alternator in the engine compartment and replace the bolts you removed earlier.
5. Reconnect the electrical connections and reconnect the battery.
- Reconnect the electrical connector to the alternator and reconnect the positive battery cable.
6. Reattach the serpentine belt and tension it properly.
- Place the serpentine belt around all the pulleys and put the tensioner back on the bolt.
- Turn the tensioner clockwise until the proper amount of tension is applied to the belt.
Now you have successfully replaced the alternator on your 1989 Chevy Celebrity.
