Should you use premium gas in a two cycle engine?
It is not necessary to use premium gas in a two-cycle engine. Two-cycle engines, commonly found in smaller equipment like lawnmowers, chainsaws, and weed trimmers, typically run on a mixture of gasoline and oil, known as a fuel-oil mix. Standard unleaded gasoline, with an octane rating of 87, is generally suitable for most two-cycle engines. Premium gas, with a higher octane rating of 91 or higher, is designed for high-performance engines that require higher compression ratios to prevent engine knocking. Since two-cycle engines do not have the same compression requirements as high-performance four-stroke engines, using premium gas does not provide any additional benefit and is considered an unnecessary expense.
