Preparation
1. Park the vehicle in a well-ventilated area.
2. Wear appropriate protective clothing, including gloves and safety glasses.
3. Gather your tools and materials, which may include a drain pan, a wrench, and a siphon hose or turkey baster.
Locate the Fuel Filter
4. Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the fuel filter. In the 1993 Ford Tempo, the fuel filter is usually situated near the engine, attached to the fuel supply line.
Disconnect the Fuel Line
5. Once you have located the fuel filter, use a wrench to loosen and disconnect the fuel line that leads to the filter. Be careful, as fuel may leak from the line when disconnected.
Drain the Gas Tank
6. Place a drain pan under the disconnected fuel line.
7. Use a siphon hose or turkey baster to extract the gas from the fuel line and into the drain pan.
8. Continue siphoning until the gas tank is completely drained.
Reconnect the Fuel Line
9. Once the gas tank is drained, reattach the fuel line to the fuel filter. Tighten the connection with the wrench.
Additional Notes:
- If the fuel line does not easily disconnect, you may need to use a special fuel line disconnect tool.
- Some vehicles may have a fuel tank drain plug instead of requiring the fuel line to be disconnected. Consult the vehicle's owner's manual for specific instructions for your model.
- If the gas tank is severely rusted or damaged, it may be necessary to replace the tank entirely.
