Why is it that you have to step on the clutch before can start engine?

It is not necessary to step on the clutch before starting an engine. If the vehicle has manual transmission, the clutch pedal is normally not pressed when starting the engine. However, in some vehicles with automatic transmission, it is recommended to press the brake pedal before turning the ignition key. This is a safety precaution to ensure the vehicle does not move inadvertently while starting the engine.
