Park your car on level ground and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake.
Open the hood of your car.
Disconnect the negative terminal of your battery. This will help to prevent electrical shock while working on the starter.
Locate the starter. It is mounted on the driver's side of the engine, just below the exhaust manifold.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the starter solenoid. This connector has two wires, one red and one blue.
Unbolt the two bolts that hold the starter to the engine. The bottom bolt is longer than the top bolt.
Take the starter out of the car. It may be necessary to pry it loose gently with a pry bar.
Remove the two nuts that hold the solenoid to the starter.
Pull the solenoid out of the starter.
You will remove the plunger with a pair of pliers.
Clean all the parts of the starter.
Reassemble all parts in reverse.
