- Place the cylinder head gasket on the cylinder head, over the dowel pins.
- Make sure the gasket is properly seated and that the dowel pins are aligned with the holes in the cylinder block.
- Lubricate the threads on the cylinder head bolts.
Step 2: Position the cylinder head.
- Carefully place the cylinder head onto the cylinder block, aligning the dowel pins with the holes in the cylinder block.
- Make sure the cylinder head gasket is properly seated between the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
- Use a pry bar to gently pry the cylinder head into place if it doesn't slide into place easily.
Step 3: Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
- Use a torque wrench to tighten the cylinder head bolts to the specified torque in the correct sequence.
- For a 306 Peugeot, the tightening sequence is as follows:
- Bolt 1
- Bolt 2
- Bolt 3
- Bolt 4
- Bolt 5
- Bolt 6
- Bolt 7
- Bolt 8
- Bolt 9
- Bolt 10
- Bolt 11
- Bolt 12
Step 4: Install the camshaft.
- Lubricate the camshaft journals and the camshaft lobes with engine oil.
- Position the camshaft in the cylinder head, making sure the camshaft lobes are facing up.
- Install the camshaft bearings and the camshaft thrust washer.
- Tighten the camshaft bearing caps to the specified torque.
Step 5: Install the timing belt.
- Install the timing belt according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Make sure the timing belt is properly tensioned.
Step 6: Install the valve cover.
- Position the valve cover gasket over the cylinder head.
- Make sure the valve cover gasket is properly seated.
- Install the valve cover and tighten the valve cover bolts to the specified torque.
Step 7: Fill the engine with coolant.
- Remove the radiator cap.
- Fill the engine with coolant until it reaches the specified level in the coolant reservoir.
Step 8: Start the engine.
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check for leaks and make sure the engine is running smoothly.
