1. Park the vehicle on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling.
3. Put on your safety glasses and protective gloves to protect yourself from fuel and debris.
1. Open the trunk of the vehicle.
2. Remove the trunk mat to expose the spare tire.
3. Locate the fuel access panel on the spare tire well. It's usually covered with a plastic cover that can be removed by lifting it up.
1. Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel pump assembly using the fuel line disconnection tool. Be cautious when disconnecting the fuel lines, as fuel may leak out.
2. Remove the electrical connectors from the fuel pump assembly.
3. Remove the mounting bolts that hold the fuel pump assembly in place.
4. Carefully remove the fuel pump assembly from the fuel tank.
1. Transfer the fuel level sensor and float from the old fuel pump assembly to the new one.
2. Install the new fuel filter onto the new fuel pump assembly.
3. Place the new fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank and connect the mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specified torque.
4. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the new fuel pump assembly.
5. Reconnect the fuel lines to the new fuel pump assembly.
1. Open the fuse box located in the engine compartment.
2. Identify the fuel pump relay. It's typically labeled or indicated in the owner's manual.
3. Carefully remove the old fuel pump relay by gently pulling it out of the socket.
4. Insert the new fuel pump relay into the socket. Make sure it's securely seated.
1. Turn on the ignition without cranking the engine. Listen for the fuel pump to prime. You should hear a humming noise coming from the fuel tank.
2. If you don't hear the fuel pump priming, repeat the fuel pump replacement steps and ensure all connections are secure.
1. Replace the plastic cover over the fuel access panel in the trunk.
2. Replace the trunk mat.
3. Close the trunk.
The fuel pump replacement process is complete. The new fuel pump and filter should resolve any issues you were experiencing with the fuel system. Before operating the vehicle, be sure to run the engine for a few minutes to allow the fuel system to pressurize. If you encounter any leaks or other problems, consult a professional mechanic.
