How do you change the water pump on BMW M47 engine fitted to rover 75?

1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery

2. Raise the front of the car using a car ramp or jack stands

3. Remove the front underpan or skid plate.

4. Detach the drive belt (serpentine belt)

5. Using the Torx E14 socket release and remove the three retaining bolts of the viscous fan clutch and take it out.

6. Remove the drive belt tensioner

7. Drain the coolant by opening the drain plug from the underside of the engine or coolant radiator drain valve.

8. Once all the coolant has been drained, remove the water pump pulley bolt and remove the pulley using the suitable puller.

9. Release and discard the four Torx T25 bolts and remove the water pump. Clean the water pump mating surface and check the condition of the sealing ring in the thermostat housing.

10. Apply a thin layer of sealant around the new water pump gasket and fit it into place, the sealing surface should be perfectly clean.

11. Secure the water pump using the four Torx bolts.

12. Replace the water pump pulley and use thread locker on the pulley bolt.

13. Tighten the drive belt tensioner and refit drive belt.

14. Refill the coolant system with 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water. Tighten the coolant drain plug.

15. Lower the car and reconnect the battery.

16. Run the engine until the thermostat opens (approx. 15 minutes) and check for any leaks.
