Tools Needed:
Wrench
Flat-head screwdriver
Step-by-Step Guide:
Locate the rear shocks on your Sportster. They are the two cylindrical components located on either side of the rear wheel.
Use the wrench to loosen the lock nuts on the top of the shocks. These lock nuts are located just below the upper shock mount.
Once the lock nuts are loose, use the flat-head screwdriver to turn the adjusting screw on the top of the shock. Turning the screw clockwise will increase the preload on the shock, making it stiffer. Turning the screw counterclockwise will decrease the preload, making it softer.
Adjust the shocks to the desired preload. The Sportster Service Manual recommends a preload of 5 to 10mm (0.2 to 0.4 inches).
Once you have adjusted the shocks to the desired preload, tighten the lock nuts back up.
Test the shocks by riding the bike. Make sure that the shocks are providing adequate support and that the bike is handling properly.
Repeat steps 3-6 if necessary to fine-tune the shock adjustment.
Tips:
If you are not sure what preload setting to use, start with the recommended setting in the Sportster Service Manual.
When adjusting the shocks, make sure that you adjust both shocks equally.
Test the shocks by riding the bike in a variety of conditions to make sure that they are providing adequate support.
If you are still not satisfied with the shock performance, you may want to consider upgrading to aftermarket shocks.
