Here are the steps involved in replacing the water pump on a 1986 Volkswagen Jetta:
1. Remove the serpentine belt by releasing the tensioner pulley.
2. Remove the fan shroud by unbolting it from the radiator support.
3. Remove the thermostat housing by unbolting it from the engine.
4. Drain the coolant from the engine by opening the drain plug on the bottom of the radiator.
5. Disconnect the water pump inlet and outlet hoses.
6. Remove the bolts that secure the water pump to the engine block.
7. Remove the old water pump from the engine.
8. Install the new water pump onto the engine block and secure it with the bolts.
9. Reattach the water pump inlet and outlet hoses.
10. Replace the thermostat housing and fan shroud.
11. Refill the coolant system with coolant.
12. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the coolant.
