The number of engines that a plane has is determined by a number of factors, including:
- The size and weight of the aircraft
- The desired range and performance
- The safety requirements
For example, a large commercial airliner that needs to fly long distances will typically have four engines. This provides redundancy in case one engine fails. A private jet that is only used for short flights may only have one engine. This saves weight and fuel.
Military aircraft that need to be able to maneuver quickly and perform acrobatic maneuvers may have as many as eight engines. This provides the necessary power and thrust.
