In July 1939, Heinkel produced what was widely considered to be the world's first true jet fighter prototype, the Heinkel He 178. The He 178 was powered by a Heinkel HeS 3 turbojet engine, and it could reach speeds of up to 650 km/h (404 mph).
Boulton Paul Defiant
The Defiant was a two-man, four-gun, powered-by-Rolls-Royce Merlin III engines, with top speeds of 301 mph. Developed in 1937 by the British aircraft company Boulton Paul. On August 11, 1937, the Defiant prototype took off from RAF Martlesham Heath. Although not equipped with a jet engine, the Boulton Paul Defiant is often considered to be the first aircraft to be armed with radar, and it could therefore be considered to be a precursor to the modern fighter jet.
