- This is the most common cause of an engine shutting off for safety. Check the oil level and add more oil if necessary.
2. Dirty Air Filter
- Replace the air filter on the starter recoil side underneath the Briggs logo. Ensure you reinstall it correctly.
3. Clogged Fuel Filter
- Replace the fuel filter located on the fuel line at the carburetor inlet.
4. Bad Spark Plug
- Remove and check the gap of the spark plug. Clean the spark plug and reinstall it if the gap is correct. If not, replace the spark plug.
5. Faulty Carburetor
- Check the carburetor for damage or leaks. Clean the carburetor if needed. Adjust the carburetor if necessary.
6. Fuel Shortage
- Make sure there is enough fuel in the tank. Check the fuel line and connections for leaks.
7. Faulty Ignition Switch
- Bypass the kill switch (with the engine off), the safety handle switch (with the engine running), and the seat switch (with the engine running) individually using short pieces of wire to check for continuity. Replace any faulty switch.
8. Faulty Solenoid
- Test the solenoid by disconnecting the wire from it and then turning the ignition key to "Start." If the engine starts, the solenoid is faulty.
9. Engine Overheating
- Check for any obstructions that may be blocking the cooling air from getting to the engine. Clean the cooling fins on the engine and cylinder head.
10. Bad Engine Bearings
- Check for excessive play in the crankshaft and camshaft bearings. If there is excessive play, the engine will need to be rebuilt.
