1. Gather the necessary tools: filter wrench, new filter, drain pan, funnel, new filter, and oil.
2. Park your motorcycle on a level surface and allow the engine to cool down.
3. Locate the oil filter. The oil filter is located on the front left side of the engine, just below the engine case.
4. Place the drain pan under the oil filter to catch any oil that may spill.
5. Using the filter wrench, loosen the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
6. Remove the old oil filter.
7. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
8. Screw on the new oil filter by hand until it is snug.
9. Do not over-tighten the oil filter.
10. Remove the drain pan from under the motorcycle.
11. Add new oil to the motorcycle. The recommended oil capacity for the VStar 650 is 3.7 quarts.
12. Check the oil level with the dipstick and make sure it is between the “full” and “add” marks.
13. Start the motorcycle and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil.
14. Check for any leaks.
