1. Locate the magneto: It's usually on the side of the engine, near the flywheel.
2. Remove the magneto cover: There may be one or more bolts holding it in place.
3. Find the adjustment screws: There should be two screws, one for timing and one for gap.
4. Turn the timing screw: This will change the timing of the spark. Turn the screw clockwise to retard the spark or counterclockwise to advance it.
5. Measure the air gap: Use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the armature and the pole shoes. The gap should be between 0.012 and 0.018 inches.
6. Adjust the air gap: Loosen the armature mounting screws and adjust the armature until the gap is correct.
7. Retighten the screws and replace the magneto cover.
