1. Gather necessary tools and materials:
- Valve clearance gauge
- Feeler gauge
- Socket wrench
- Extension
- 8mm socket
- 10mm socket
2. Prepare the ATV:
- Allow the engine to cool down if it's been running.
- Remove the front seat.
- Drain the oil from the engine by opening the drain bolt located under the engine.
3. Locate the cylinder head cover:
- It is located on the top of the cylinder head and is held in place by four 10 mm bolts.
4. Remove the valve adjustment caps:
- Using an 8mm socket and extension, remove the two 8mm bolts that hold the valve adjustment covers.
- Remove the valve adjustment caps.
5. Measure valve clearances:
- Turn the engine over until you feel the compression stroke or until you hear air blowing out of the spark plug hole.
- Insert the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the valve stem for the intake valve. Ensure the correct side of the feeler gauge is facing up.
- It should have a slight drag (refer to the owner's manual for the specified clearance).
6. Adjust valve clearances (if necessary):
- If the valve clearance is too tight or too loose, you will need to adjust it.
- Loosen the locknut on the valve adjuster until you can easily turn the adjuster screw.
- Insert the proper-sized feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the valve stem.
- Turn the adjuster screw until you feel a slight drag on the feeler gauge (refer to the owner's manual for the specified clearance).
- Hold the adjuster screw in position and tighten the locknut.
- Repeat for the exhaust valve.
7. Reinstall the valve adjustment covers and caps.
8. Reinstall the front seat.
9. Reinstall the oil drain plug and refill with new oil to the recommended level.
