The flywheel has two timing marks:
* A small punch mark on the edge of the flywheel, near the center. This mark corresponds to top dead center (TDC) of the piston.
* A larger arrow-shaped mark on the edge of the flywheel, about 1/4 inch from the small punch mark. This mark corresponds to 30 degrees before top dead center (BTDC).
Cylinder head marks
There are two timing marks on the cylinder head:
* A small dot on the top of the cylinder head, near the spark plug hole. This mark corresponds to TDC.
* A long, thin line on the top of the cylinder head, about 1/4 inch from the small dot. This mark corresponds to 30 degrees BTDC.
To align the timing marks:
1. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder head.
2. Insert a long, thin screwdriver into the spark plug hole and turn the engine over until the piston is at TDC. The screwdriver will be at the highest point in its travel.
3. Align the small punch mark on the flywheel with the small dot on the cylinder head.
4. Check that the arrow-shaped mark on the flywheel is aligned with the long, thin line on the cylinder head.
If the timing marks are not aligned, you will need to adjust the camshaft timing.
