Obtain the necessary tools and parts. This includes a new speedometer cable, a 1/4-inch wrench, a screwdriver, and pliers.
Locate the speedometer cable. On a 2003 Harley Davidson Sportster, it is located behind the front wheel, near the engine.
Disconnect the old speedometer cable. Use the 1/4-inch wrench to loosen the nut that holds the cable in place, and then pull the cable out of the socket.
Install the new speedometer cable. Insert the new cable into the socket and hand-tighten the nut.
Secure the speedometer cable. Use the screwdriver to tighten the clamp that holds the cable in place.
Reconnect the speedometer cable to the instrument cluster. Insert the cable into the socket on the back of the cluster and tighten the nut with the 1/4-inch wrench.
Test the speedometer. Take the motorcycle for a ride and verify that the speedometer is working properly.
Additional tips:
If the speedometer still does not work after following these steps, the problem may be with the instrument cluster rather than the cable.
Consult the motorcycle's service manual for specific instructions on how to replace the speedometer cable and troubleshoot speedometer problems.
