How do you replace the transmission modulator valve on a 1985 380sl Mercedes Benz?

Tools Needed

- 3/8-inch socket wrench

- 1/4-inch ratchet

- 7mm Allen wrench

- Flat-blade screwdriver

- Pliers

- Transmission fluid drain pan

- New transmission modulator valve

Instructions

1. Park your Mercedes-Benz 380SL on a level surface and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake.

2. If your Mercedes is a 1985 model with a V-8 engine, remove the air cleaner housing. On 1985 models, if yours is equipped with a 6-cylinder engine, no parts need to be removed.

3. Locate the transmission modulator valve. On 1985 models with a V-8, it is on the right side of the transmission, near the front. On 1985 models with a 6-cylinder, the modulator valve is on the left side of the transmission, near the rear.

4. Place a transmission fluid drain pan under the modulator valve.

5. Use the 7mm Allen wrench to loosen the banjo fitting that connects the transmission fluid line to the modulator valve. Be careful not to drop the banjo fitting or the O-ring that is on it.

6. Remove the transmission fluid line from the modulator valve by pulling it straight out.

7. Use the flat-blade screwdriver to pry the old modulator valve out of the transmission. Be careful not to damage the transmission case.

8. Clean the modulator valve bore in the transmission with a rag.

9. Install the new modulator valve by pressing it into the bore until it is seated.

10. Reinstall the transmission fluid line by pushing it into the modulator valve until it clicks into place.

11. Tighten the banjo fitting using the 7mm Allen wrench.

12. Replace the air cleaner housing, if necessary.

13. Add transmission fluid to the transmission until the level is full.

14. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to circulate the new transmission fluid.
