- 16mm spark plug wrench
- 10mm socket
- Ratchet
- Spark plug gap tool
Instructions
Step 1: Disconnect Battery
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent any electrical accidents during the process.
Step 2: Remove the Ignition Coil Cover
Locate the ignition coil cover (usually marked "Zündspule") on top of the engine. It's a black plastic cover with four 10mm bolts holding it in place.
Remove the bolts and carefully lift off the ignition coil cover.
Step 3: Locate Spark Plugs
Underneath the ignition coil cover, you'll see the four spark plugs. They are located at the top of each cylinder in the engine block.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coils
The ignition coils are connected to the spark plugs by wires. To remove the ignition coils, simply press down on the locking tab on each coil and pull upwards to disconnect.
Step 5: Remove Old Spark Plugs
Use the 16mm spark plug wrench to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine.
Step 6: Check and Adjust Spark Plug Gap
Use the spark plug gap tool to check the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode of the new spark plugs. Adjust the gap if necessary to match the manufacturer's specifications.
Step 7: Install New Spark Plugs
Screw in the new spark plugs by hand until they are snug. Then use the spark plug wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Step 8: Reattach Ignition Coils
Reattach the ignition coils by connecting the wires and pressing down on the locking tabs.
Step 9: Reinstall Ignition Coil Cover
Reinstall the ignition coil cover by aligning it with the mounting bolts and tightening them back in place.
Step 10: Reconnect Battery
Reconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
That's it! You have successfully changed the spark plugs in your VW Polo 1.2.
