How do you adjust the valves on a 1986 2.3L Mercedes 190E?

Tools needed:

-10 mm wrench

-17 mm wrench

-Feeler gauge

Instructions

1. Prepare the engine by turning it off and allowing it to cool down. Make sure the parking brake is engaged and the car is in gear.

2. Locate the valve cover. It is located at the top of the engine and has a black plastic cap.

3. Remove the valve cover. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the bolts holding the valve cover in place. Be careful not to drop the bolts into the engine.

4. Locate the valve lash adjusters. They are located on the top of the cylinder head and have a small nut on them.

5. Use a feeler gauge to measure the valve lash. The correct valve lash is between 0.006 and 0.008 inches.

6. If the valve lash is not within the correct range, use a 17 mm wrench to turn the nut on the valve lash adjuster. Turning the nut clockwise will decrease the valve lash, while turning it counterclockwise will increase the valve lash.

7. Recheck the valve lash until it is within the correct range.

8. Replace the valve cover and bolts. Tighten the bolts until they are snug.

9. Start the engine and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts until the leaks stop.

Tips

-To make it easier to reach the valve lash adjusters, you can remove the intake manifold and the fuel injector rail.

-If you are not confident in your ability to adjust the valves, you can take your car to a qualified mechanic.
