1. Park the car on a level surface and turn off the engine.
2. Open the hood and locate the transmission fluid dipstick, which is usually marked with a yellow or orange handle. On the 1993 740i, the transmission fluid dipstick is located on the passenger side of the engine compartment, close to the front. It has a yellow handle.
3. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a cloth.
4. Reinsert the dipstick all the way and then pull it out again to check the fluid level.
5. The fluid level should be between the "MIN" and "MAX" marks on the dipstick.
6. If the fluid level is low, add enough DEXRON II or DEXRON III transmission fluid to bring it up to the "MAX" mark.
7. Replace the dipstick and close the hood.
