The pickup unit of the hour gauge consists of a permanent magnet and a coil of wire (inductor). The permanent magnet rotates with the engine's crankshaft or flywheel.

3. Electromagnetic Induction:

As the permanent magnet rotates, it induces an electromotive force (EMF) in the stationary coil of wire due to electromagnetic induction. This induced EMF is proportional to the speed of rotation and the strength of the magnetic field.

4. Electronic Circuitry:

The electrical signal from the pickup unit is then processed by the hour gauge's electronic circuitry. This circuitry may contain various components such as rectifiers, capacitors, and microprocessors, which convert and process the electrical signal.

5. Counter:

The processed electronic signal is used to increment a digital counter or register in the hour gauge. The counter accumulates and records the total elapsed time during which the engine has been operating.

6. Display:

The accumulated running hours are displayed on the hour gauge's readout, usually in hours and tenths of hours. Some advanced hour gauges may offer additional features such as a resettable trip meter, alarms, or a digital display that also shows other parameters like revolutions per minute (RPM).

7. Power Supply:

The hour gauge requires a power supply to operate. It may be powered by the tractor's electrical system (e.g., battery) or have a self-contained power source (e.g., a small internal battery).
