- Jack and jack stands
- Socket set
- Pliers
- Pry bar
- Oil drain pan
- New transmission oil
Instructions:
1. Prepare the car. Park the car on a level surface. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Engage the parking brake. Raise the car using the jack and jack stands.
2. Drain the transmission fluid. Locate the transmission drain plug, which is usually a 17mm bolt located at the bottom of the transmission. Use a drain pan to catch the transmission fluid as you remove the plug. Allow all of the fluid to drain out, which may take a few minutes.
3. Remove the gearshift linkage. Locate the gearshift linkage, which is a metal rod that connects the gearshift to the transmission. Disconnect the linkage by removing the cotter pin and then sliding the rod out of the linkage arm.
4. Remove the starter motor. Locate the starter motor, which is a cylindrical electrical device mounted on the side of the transmission. Disconnect the electrical connector from the starter motor. Then, use a socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the starter motor in place. Remove the starter motor.
5. Remove the bell housing bolts. Locate the bell housing bolts, which are the bolts that connect the transmission to the engine. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts. Be careful not to drop the bolts into the transmission.
6. Separate the transmission from the engine. Use a pry bar to pry the transmission away from the engine. Be careful not to pry too hard, as you could damage the transmission or the engine.
7. Remove the transmission. Once the transmission is separated from the engine, you can remove it from the car. Be careful not to drop the transmission, as it is heavy.
8. Install the new transmission. Reverse the steps above to install a new transmission.
When finished, fill the transmission with new oil.
