- Remove the lug nuts and wheel covers of the wheel you’ll be working on.
- Remove the oil drain plug located at the bottom of the brake drum. Some vehicles may have a rubber, threaded plug you’ll need to remove first before reaching the oil drain plug.
- Drain all of the old brake fluid from the brake drum.
- Remove the dust cover from the brake hub’s backplate.
- Remove the wheel cylinder’s rubber seals.
- Pull the brake shoes in the opposite direction of the backing plate.
- Unhook the brake shoe return springs from the wheel cylinder’s lever arms by pulling them upward.
- Pry the brake shoe spring hold-downs away from the shoe anchors and pull the shoes upward and out of the drum and wheel cylinder assembly.
- Slide the parking brake lever out of the backing plate.
- Using a screwdriver or pry bar, pry the parking brake lever arm back and forth while pulling outward to remove the arm.
- Pry out the starwheel or adjuster wheel in the upper and lower adjuster hole locations
- Remove the backing plate bolts and remove the backing plate.
- Pry out the drum hub’s retaining snap-ring using the screwdriver.
- Tap behind the hub with a ball peen hammer or rubber mallet to separate it from the spindle.
- Spray WD-40, PB Blaster, or a similar lubricant on the spindle if the hub is hard to get off
- Pry off the hub.
