Why does heat pump compressor freeze?

Refrigerant leak

One of the most common causes of a frozen heat pump compressor is a refrigerant leak. When there is a leak in the refrigerant line, the refrigerant escapes from the system and the pressure inside the compressor drops. This causes the compressor to work harder to compress the refrigerant, which in turn causes it to freeze.

Dirty air filter

A dirty air filter can also cause a heat pump compressor to freeze. When the air filter is dirty, it restricts airflow to the evaporator coil and causes it to freeze. This in turn causes the compressor to freeze.

Low refrigerant charge

A low refrigerant charge can also cause a heat pump compressor to freeze. When there is not enough refrigerant in the system, the compressor has to work harder to compress it, which in turn causes it to freeze.

Faulty compressor

In some cases, a faulty compressor can also cause it to freeze. If the compressor is not working properly, it may not be able to compress the refrigerant properly, which can lead to freezing.

Low outdoor temperature

When the outdoor temperature is too low, the heat pump may not be able to extract enough heat from the outside air to heat the home. This can cause the compressor to freeze.
