Parts Needed:
- Ignition Switch (Replacement)
1. Disconnect Battery:
- Locate the negative terminal of your battery which is usually marked with the "-" sign.
- Use a 10mm socket wrench to loosen the nut securing the negative battery cable.
- Lift off the negative cable and store it away safely until the ignition switch installation is complete.
2. Remove Steering Column Cover:
- Using the flathead screwdriver, carefully pry open the plastic cover around the steering column.
- Remove all screws holding the cover in place.
- Locate the ignition switch bezel, it typically has the key cylinder with the "Lock", "ACC," "On", "Start" markings.
3. Disconnect Wiring Harness:
- Identify and unplug all electrical connectors attached to the ignition switch (usually a multi-pin connector).
4. Remove Lock Cylinder:
- Insert your key into the ignition switch and turn it to the "On" position.
- Push a small screwdriver into the release hole (which becomes visible when the ignition switch is turned).
- The lock cylinder should release, allowing you to pull it out.
5. Remove Ignition Switch:
- Once the lock cylinder is out, you can access the ignition switch mounting screws.
- Remove the screws holding the ignition switch in place.
- Pull the ignition switch out gently, being careful not to damage any wiring.
6. Installation:
- Compare the new ignition switch to the old one to make sure they match.
- Insert the new ignition switch into its place and align the mounting holes.
- Insert the mounting screws and tighten them to secure the ignition switch.
- Reinstall the lock cylinder by aligning and pushing it into the ignition switch.
7. Reconnect Wiring Harness:
- Reconnect the wiring harnesses that you disconnected earlier.
8. Replace Steering Column Cover:
- Reinstall the steering column cover by aligning it and then securing it with the screws you removed.
- Snap on the ignition switch bezel.
9. Reconnect Battery:
- Reinstall the negative battery cable onto its terminal and secure it with the 10mm socket wrench.
Testing the Ignition Switch:
- Turn the ignition key to the "On" position and check if the dashboard lights up and the engine starts normally.

- Ignition switches can be specific to the car model and year, so make sure you're purchasing a switch compatible with your 1991 Mazda Navajo.
