Why does engine speed increase when defrost is turned on?

The engine speed does not increase when the defrost is turned on. The engine continues to run at its normal idle speed. What you may be hearing is the electric fan that comes on when the defrost is turned on. This fan helps to circulate the warm air from the heater core throughout the passenger compartment.
