How do you change the timing belt on a 2000 Chevy Metro with 4 cylinder engine?

Tools Needed:

- 10mm socket wrench

- 12mm socket wrench

- 14mm socket wrench

- 17mm socket wrench

- Ratchets

- Flat-head screwdriver

- Adjustable wrench

- Timing light

- Feeler gauge

- Torque wrench

- New timing belt

- New water pump (optional)

- Coolant (optional)

Instructions:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. This is important to do to avoid any electrical accidents.

2. Remove the drive belts. There are two drive belts that need to be removed: the serpentine belt and the timing belt. To remove the serpentine belt, loosen the tensioner pulley and then remove the belt. To remove the timing belt, loosen the tensioner pulley and then remove the belt.

3. Remove the timing belt cover. The timing belt cover is located on the front of the engine. It is held in place by several bolts. Remove the bolts and then remove the cover.

4. Inspect the timing belt. Look for any cracks, tears, or other damage. If the timing belt is damaged, it needs to be replaced.

5. Set the engine to top dead center (TDC). TDC is the point at which the piston is at the highest point in its cylinder. To set the engine to TDC, turn the crankshaft until the timing mark on the crankshaft pulley lines up with the timing mark on the engine block.

6. Loosen the tensioner pulley. The tensioner pulley is located on the front of the engine. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and then turn the tensioner pulley to release the tension on the timing belt.

7. Remove the timing belt. Once the tension is released, you can remove the timing belt from the engine.

8. Install the new timing belt. Start by installing the timing belt on the crankshaft pulley. Then, route the belt around the water pump, idler pulley, and camshaft pulley. Make sure that the timing marks on the belt line up with the timing marks on the engine.

9. Tighten the tensioner pulley. Once the timing belt is installed, tighten the tensioner pulley bolt. Tighten the bolt to the specified torque.

10. Reinstall the timing belt cover. Reinstall the timing belt cover and secure it with the bolts.

11. Reinstall the drive belts. Reinstall the serpentine belt and the timing belt.

12. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.

13. Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks from the water pump or other areas. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts or replace the gasket.

Additional Notes:

- If you are replacing the water pump, it is a good idea to replace the timing belt at the same time.

- If you are not comfortable performing this repair yourself, you can take your car to a qualified mechanic.
