How do you change the transmission fluid on a 1993 Ford Tempo?

Tools and Supplies

* 5 quarts of ATF Dexron®-Mercon® automatic transmission fluid

* 17 mm wrench

* 1/2 inch ratchet with a 1/2 inch extension

* 1/2 inch drive torque wrench

* Funnel

* Rags

Procedure

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Set the parking brake.

3. Turn the engine on and let it idle for a few minutes to warm up the transmission fluid.

4. Turn the engine off.

5. Crawl under the vehicle and locate the transmission fluid drain plug. It is located on the bottom of the transmission pan.

6. Place the 17 mm wrench on the drain plug and loosen it.

7. Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the drain pan.

8. Replace the drain plug and tighten it until snug.

9. Remove the transmission fluid dipstick or fill plug. It is located on the top of the transmission pan next to the speedometer cable.

10. Insert the funnel into the transmission fluid dipstick or fill tube.

11. Add 4 quarts of ATF Dexron®-Mercon® automatic transmission fluid.

12. Replace the dipstick or fill plug.

13. Start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes to circulate the new transmission fluid.

14. Check the transmission fluid level and add more fluid if necessary.

15. Lower the vehicle.
