- Lug wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Brake caliper wrench
- Bungee cord or rope
Here are the steps on how to remove the front brake drums:
1. Loosen the lug nuts. Use the lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that you want to remove the brake drum from. Loosen the lug nuts enough so that you can turn them by hand, but do not remove them completely.
2. Jack up the car. Place the jack under the car and raise it until the wheel is off the ground.
3. Remove the wheel. Use your hands or the lug wrench to remove the wheel from the car.
4. Remove the hubcap. Use the flat-head screwdriver to pry off the hubcap from the wheel hub.
5. Remove the cotter pin. Use the pliers to remove the cotter pin from the castle nut.
6. Remove the castle nut. Use the brake caliper wrench to loosen the castle nut.
7. Remove the washer and bearing. Use your hands or the brake caliper wrench to remove the washer and bearing from the spindle.
8. Pull the brake drum off. Use your hands to pull the brake drum off of the spindle. If the drum is stuck, you can use a bungee cord or rope to help pull it off.
Note: Do not pull the wheel cylinder and brake line off the spindle. Do not let the wheel cylinder hang from the brake line. Tie it to the frame for support.
Once you have removed the brake drum, you can inspect the brake shoes and replace them if necessary. To reinstall the brake drum, simply follow the steps in reverse order.
