Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle
- Park your vehicle on a flat, level surface.
- Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shock.
Step 2: Locate the Fuel Pump
- The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank.
- In the 2003 Grand Am, the fuel tank is located under the rear seat.
Step 3: Remove the Fuel Tank
- Remove the rear seat by pulling up on the front edge and lifting it out.
- Loosen the fuel filler cap to relieve pressure in the fuel tank.
- Disconnect the fuel lines from the fuel tank.
- Remove the bolts holding the fuel tank in place and lower the tank.
Step 4: Remove the Fuel Pump
- Once the fuel tank is lowered, you will be able to see the fuel pump.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump.
- Use the fuel line disconnect tool to disconnect the fuel lines.
- Remove the bolts holding the fuel pump in place and lift the pump out of the tank.
Step 5: Install the New Fuel Pump
- Place the new fuel pump into the fuel tank.
- Secure the fuel pump with the bolts you removed earlier.
- Reconnect the fuel lines and the electrical connector.
- Raise the fuel tank back into place and secure it with the bolts.
Step 6: Reconnect the Battery
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
Step 7: Test the Fuel Pump
- Turn on the ignition and listen for the fuel pump to run.
- If the fuel pump does not run, check the electrical connections and fuel lines.
Step 8: Replace the Rear Seat
- Replace the rear seat by placing it back in its original position.
Step 9: Start the Vehicle
- Start the vehicle and check for any leaks.
