How do you get the drum brakes off a 1988 Mazda 323 dx bolt looks pinched in on two sides and wont turn?

1. Loosen the lug nuts. Use a lug wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the wheel that you are working on. Do not remove the lug nuts completely.

2. Jack up the car. Use a jack to raise the car until the wheel is off the ground. Make sure that the car is stable before proceeding.

3. Remove the wheel. Use the lug wrench to remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel.

4. Remove the brake drum backing plate. There are usually four bolts that hold the backing plate in place. Remove these bolts and take off the backing plate.

5. Remove the brake shoes. There are two brake shoes in each drum. To remove them, push the top of the brake shoe down and off of the brake shoe anchor pin. Then, pull the bottom of the brake shoe away from the brake drum.

6. Remove the brake drum. The brake drum is held in place by a single bolt. Remove this bolt and take off the brake drum.

7. If the drum looks pinched:

- Check for rust and corrosion on the outer surface or the bolt holes.

- If there is corrosion, treat it with a rust dissolver.

- Make sure the bolt head is clean and use the correct size wrench to avoid rounding off the corners.

- Use penetrating oil to help loosen it.

- Alternatively, you can remove the rear wheel and try reaching the pinch bolt from the back.

8. Install the new brake drum. To install the new brake drum, simply place it over the brake shoes and align the bolt holes. Replace the bolt and tighten it securely.

9. Install the brake shoes. To install the brake shoes, simply push the top of the brake shoe over the brake shoe anchor pin. Then, pull the bottom of the brake shoe into place and fasten the spring.

10. Install the brake drum backing plate. To install the brake drum backing plate, simply place it over the brake shoes and align the bolt holes. Replace the bolts and tighten them securely.

11. Install the wheel. Replace the wheel and tighten the lug nuts. Lower the car and remove the jack.

12. Test the brakes. Before driving the car, test the brakes to make sure that they are working properly.
