Changing the Oil in a 1995 Toyota Tercel

Tools and Materials Needed:

  1. New Oil Filter (Consult owner’s manual for correct size)
  2. New Oil (Check the owner’s manual for the recommended type and amount of oil)
  3. Oil Drain Pan
  4. Funnel
  5. Wrench
  6. Rags

Procedure:

  1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Engage the parking brake
  2. Locate the oil drain plug. It is usually located on the bottom of the oil pan. On some models it may be necessary to remove a plastic access cover for engine underbody access.
  3. Place the oil drain pan under the drain plug.
  4. Using a wrench, loosen and remove the oil drain plug.
  5. Allow the oil to drain completely into the oil drain pan.
  6. Once the oil has drained, replace the oil drain plug.
  7. Locate the oil filter. It is usually located near the top of the engine.
  8. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the oil filter. Be careful not to spill any oil.
  9. Apply a thin coat of new oil to the gasket of the new oil filter.
  10. Screw the new oil filter onto the engine by hand until it is snug.
  11. Do not overtighten the oil filter.
  12. Add new oil to the engine through the oil fill cap. Use the funnel to avoid spilling oil.
  13. Add the amount of oil recommended by the owner’s manual.
  14. Check the oil level using the dipstick. The oil level should be between the “full” and “add” marks on the dipstick.
  15. Replace the oil fill cap.
  16. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
  17. Check for any leaks under the car.
  18. If there are no leaks, turn off the engine and dispose of the old oil and oil filter properly.
