How do you reduce the idle speed on a 2001 Toyota Corolla?

Tools and Materials

* Phillips head screwdriver

* Flathead screwdriver

* 10mm socket wrench

* 14mm socket wrench

* 12mm socket wrench

* Adjustable wrench

* Wire brush

Instructions

1. Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine.

2. Open the hood of your car.

3. Locate the throttle body. It is usually located on the front of the engine and has a large black hose connected to it.

4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the throttle body.

5. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the throttle body in place.

6. Carefully lift the throttle body off the engine.

7. Use a flathead screwdriver to scrape away any carbon buildup from the throttle body.

8. Use a wire brush to clean the throttle body bore.

9. Reinstall the throttle body onto the engine.

10. Replace the two screws and reconnect the electrical connector.

11. Start your engine and let it idle for about 5 minutes.

12. If the idle speed is too high, use a 14mm socket wrench to turn the idle speed adjustment screw counterclockwise.

13. Turn the screw until the idle speed is at 750 RPM.

14. Close the hood of your car.

Tips

* If you are not comfortable working on your own car, you can take it to a mechanic and have them perform this service.

* When cleaning the throttle body, be sure to avoid damaging the throttle position sensor.

* If you are unable to reduce the idle speed to 750 RPM, you may need to have your car's idle air control valve replaced.
