How do you change the thermostat on a 1994 Mazda Protege?

Tools and Materials Needed:

- Replacement Thermostat

- 5/8" Wrench or Socket

- New Gasket (if not included with thermostat)

- Drain Pan

- Funnel

- Coolant (check owner's manual for type and amount required)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Allow your vehicle to cool down thoroughly. This will prevent any injuries from occurring and minimize the risk of scalding.

2. Drain the coolant. Place a drain pan under the vehicle and locate the radiator drain plug. Open the drain plug and allow most of the coolant to drain into the pan.

3. Locate the thermostat. The thermostat is usually located on the engine block near the top radiator hose. It is typically secured by 2 or 3 bolts.

4. Remove the thermostat housing bolts and remove the thermostat. Use the 5/8" wrench or socket to remove the bolts that hold the thermostat in place. Be careful not to drop any bolts into the engine bay. Once the bolts are removed, you can take out the thermostat and gasket.

5. Install the new thermostat and gasket. Place the new gasket and thermostat into the housing. Make sure that the thermostat is installed correctly, with the valve facing the engine block.

6. Reinstall the thermostat housing bolts. Use a wrench or socket to tighten the bolts that hold the thermostat in place.

7. Refill the coolant. Use a funnel to add new coolant to the radiator or coolant reservoir. Make sure to check the coolant level in the overflow reservoir as well.

8. Check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for leaks around the thermostat housing, radiator, and hoses. If you see any leaks, tighten the related component or replace a worn gasket as needed.

9. Test your thermostat. Take the car for a short drive and turn the heater on. The heater should start to blow hot air after a few minutes. This means your new thermostat is working correctly.

It's important to follow the instructions in your vehicle's owner's manual, as specific instructions may vary based on the model and year of your vehicle.
