Tools and Materials Needed:
- New Speedometer Cable
- Adjustable wrench
- Pliers
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Jack and jack stands (if needed)
Instructions:
1. Park your vehicle in a safe location.
- Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.
2. Disconnect the battery.
- This step is optional but recommended to prevent any electrical accidents.
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery using a wrench.
3. Locate the speedometer cable.
- In the 1994 Mazda Protege, it is typically located behind the instrument cluster, near the firewall.
4. Access the speedometer cable.
- If needed, remove the instrument cluster or other components to access the speedometer cable.
- You may need to use a flat-head screwdriver or other tools to pry open panels or remove fasteners.
5. Disconnect the old speedometer cable.
- Use an adjustable wrench or pliers to loosen the nut or fitting that holds the speedometer cable at both ends (from the transmission and behind the instrument cluster).
- Be careful not to drop or lose the nuts, bolts, or other small parts.
6. Remove the old speedometer cable.
- Pull the old cable out of the vehicle through the firewall or other openings.
7. Install the new speedometer cable.
- Carefully insert the replacement cable into the vehicle through the firewall or other openings.
- Make sure to guide it properly to avoid any kinks or bends.
8. Connect the new speedometer cable.
- Secure the new speedometer cable to the transmission and the instrument cluster using the nuts, bolts, or fittings that you removed earlier.
- Tighten them securely.
9. Test the speedometer.
- Reconnect the battery, if you disconnected it earlier.
- Start the engine and check if the speedometer is working correctly.
10. Turn off the hold light.
- If the hold light is still on after replacing the speedometer cable, you may need to reset it.
- Depending on the specific model and trim level, the process of resetting the hold light may vary.
- It may involve pressing a specific button combination or disconnecting the battery for a few minutes.
11. Verify the repair.
- Test drive the vehicle and ensure that the speedometer is functioning correctly and the hold light remains off.
Note:
If the speedometer still does not work after these steps, there may be other underlying problems, such as a faulty speedometer head or transmission sensor. In such cases, it is recommended to seek assistance from a qualified mechanic or consult your vehicle's repair manual for further troubleshooting and repairs.
