1. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position. This will power the engine's electrical system, but will not start the engine.
2. Press the clutch pedal (for a manual transmission) or put the transmission in "Park" (for an automatic transmission).
3. Try to turn the engine over using the starter motor. If the engine is locked up, the starter motor will not be able to turn the engine over. You will hear a clicking sound as the starter motor tries to engage the flywheel.
4. If the engine does not turn over, release the clutch pedal (for a manual transmission) or put the transmission in "Neutral" (for an automatic transmission).
5. Try to turn the engine over by hand. If the engine is locked up, you will not be able to turn the engine over by hand.
If you are unable to turn the engine over by hand, it is likely that the engine is locked up. This can be caused by a number of things, including a broken piston, a seized connecting rod, or a damaged crankshaft.
