1. Park the car on level ground and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down for several minutes.
2. Open the hood of the car.
3. Locate the oil dipstick. It is usually located near the front of the engine, and is marked with a yellow or orange handle.
4. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and wipe it clean with a rag or paper towel.
5. Reinsert the dipstick into the engine until it is fully seated.
6. Pull the dipstick out again and check the oil level. The oil should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
7. If the oil level is low, you will need to add oil to the engine. Use the type of oil that is recommended for your car.
8. Replace the dipstick and close the hood of the car.
