Open the Hood: Release the hood release lever inside your car, typically located beneath the dashboard on the driver's side. Go to the front of the car and lift the hood.
Locate the Engine Cover: The engine cover may be located on top of the engine compartment, secured with a few bolts or clips. Remove these fasteners and lift off the cover to expose the engine.
Identify the Spark Plug Wires: On a 4-cylinder engine, there will be four spark plug wires connected to the individual spark plugs. Follow these wires to locate the spark plugs.
Remove the Spark Plug Wires: Carefully grasp each spark plug wire near the spark plug and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Pull straight up to disconnect the wire from the spark plug. Repeat this process for all four spark plugs.
NOTE: Be cautious not to pull on the wires themselves, as this can damage them. Grasp the rubber boots or connectors near the spark plugs instead.
Unscrew the Spark Plugs: Use a spark plug wrench or socket with an extension to loosen and remove the spark plugs. Turn the spark plugs counterclockwise to loosen them and carefully unscrew them by hand once they're loose.
Replace the Spark Plugs: Inspect the old spark plugs for wear, damage, or deposits. Compare them with the new spark plugs to ensure they are the correct type. Screw in the new spark plugs by hand first, then use the spark plug wrench to tighten them. Do not overtighten the spark plugs, as this can damage the threads.
Reconnect the Spark Plug Wires: Reinstall the spark plug wires by pushing them back onto the spark plugs. Twist them clockwise until they click or snap into place to ensure a secure connection.
Replace the Engine Cover: If you removed the engine cover, reinstall it by securing the bolts or clips you removed earlier.
Close the Hood: Lower the hood and secure it by engaging the hood latch.
Make sure that all the spark plug wires are securely connected and that the spark plugs are tightened properly before starting the engine.
