- New transmission fluid (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
- A funnel
- A drain pan
- A wrench
- A screwdriver
- A pair of gloves
Step 2: Prepare the vehicle
- Park the vehicle on a level surface. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down.
- Engage the parking brake. This will help to prevent the vehicle from rolling while you are working.
Step 3: Locate the transmission fluid drain plug
- The drain plug is located on the bottom of the transmission pan. It is usually a 17mm bolt.
- Place the drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
Step 4: Drain the transmission fluid
- Use the wrench to loosen the transmission fluid drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the drain pan.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain into the drain pan. This may take a few minutes.
- Once all of the transmission fluid has drained out, replace the drain plug.
Step 5: Refill the transmission fluid
- Use the funnel to add new transmission fluid to the transmission. Add the amount of fluid that is specified in your owner's manual.
- Replace the fluid check plug.
Step 6: Check the transmission fluid level
- Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
- Check the transmission fluid level using the dipstick. The fluid level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
Step 7: Test drive the vehicle
- Take the vehicle for a test drive. Make sure that the transmission shifts smoothly through all of the gears.
Note: If you have a manual transmission, you may need to bleed the clutch line after changing the transmission fluid.
