1. Park your Sportage on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Turn the engine off and allow it to cool down completely.
3. Open the hood of your Sportage and remove the plastic engine cover.
4. Locate the camshaft alignment marks. The intake camshaft alignment mark is located on the left side of the engine, near the top of the cylinder head. The exhaust camshaft alignment mark is located on the right side of the engine, near the top of the cylinder head.
5. Align the camshaft alignment marks with the marks on the timing chain cover. The intake camshaft alignment mark should be aligned with the “T” mark on the timing chain cover. The exhaust camshaft alignment mark should be aligned with the “E” mark on the timing chain cover.
6. If the camshaft alignment marks are not aligned, you will need to adjust the timing chain. To do this, loosen the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley in place, and then rotate the tensioner pulley until the camshaft alignment marks are aligned.
7. Once the camshaft alignment marks are aligned, tighten the bolt that holds the tensioner pulley in place.
8. Reinstall the plastic engine cover and close the hood of your Sportage.
9. Start the engine and check for any unusual noises or vibrations. If you hear any unusual noises or vibrations, you may need to adjust the timing chain again.
