Before you begin:
- Disconnect battery.
- Relieve fuel system pressure.
Steps to replace the fuel pump:
1. Remove Parts
- Pull up the rear seat and remove the 4 bolts that hold the access plate in place.
- Remove the cover plate.
- Remove fuel sender from fuel pump mounting flange by turning it counter-clockwise. Be careful not to spill any fuel.
- Disconnect the fuel outlet pipe, fuel inlet pipe and electrical connector from the fuel sender unit.
- Remove fuel sender from fuel pump assembly by pulling straight up.
2. Remove Fuel Pump
- Remove the lock ring from the fuel pump assembly by bending the lock tabs, turning the lock ring counterclockwise, and lifting the lock ring off.
- Remove the fuel pump assembly by pulling the fuel pump straight up. The float and arm will remain in the fuel tank.
3. Install New Fuel Pump
- Install new "O"-ring on the fuel sender unit.
- Install fuel pump assembly by carefully lowering it into the fuel tank.
- Install the lock ring. Turn the lock ring clockwise until lock tabs on the lock ring snap in.
- Install fuel sender unit by threading it into the fuel pump mounting flange. Turn clockwise until hand-tight.
- Connect the fuel inlet pipe, fuel outlet pipe and electrical connector to the fuel sender unit.
4. Secure the Fuel Tank Cover Plate
- Install access cover plate.
- Replace the four cover plate bolts.
- Install the rear seat.
- Reconnect the battery.
