How do you replace the water pump on a 1992 Mazda Protege?

Tools and materials needed:

- socket set

- wrench set

- screwdriver

- pliers

- gasket maker

- replacement water pump

- new coolant

1. Drain the coolant. Place a drain pan under the radiator and loosen the petcock or drain plug to drain the coolant.

2. Remove the serpentine belt. The serpentine belt drives the water pump, so you will need to remove it to access the water pump. Loosen the tensioner pulley bolt and remove the belt.

3. Remove the water pump bolts. There are usually four bolts that hold the water pump in place. Remove these bolts and carefully remove the water pump from the engine.

4. Clean the mating surface. Clean the mating surface of the engine block and the water pump to ensure a good seal.

5. Apply gasket maker. Apply a thin bead of gasket maker to the mating surface of the water pump.

6. Install the new water pump. Carefully install the new water pump onto the engine block. Be sure to align the gasket surfaces and tighten the bolts securely.

7. Reinstall the serpentine belt. Reinstall the serpentine belt and tension the tensioner pulley.

8. Refill the coolant. Add new coolant to the radiator and overflow reservoir.

9. Start the engine and check for leaks. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks from the water pump. If there are any leaks, tighten the bolts until the leak stops.
